Living with Monsters – Kids Treehouse

As ever I berate myself for not updating my blog often enough and must do better. This week has seen real movement on household projects. One of these, the new kids Treehouse, features heavily in our “Summer with the Monsters”.

Ever since we cut down an old an beech tree in the back garden leaving a large stump I’ve hankered for building the kids a treehouse. Now that the back door porch and kitchen are almost finished it felt like I had time to give this project a go.

As you can see I’ve built a house with an approximate 1800mm by 1800mm foot print . It’s approximately 1400mm tall with a simple bitumen corrugated panel pent roof. Around it we have some decking to make a balcony, and a few offcuts and spare decking have been repurposed to make a handrail.

The walls were insulated the with some expanded polystyrene I had left over from a old job. And I’ve started lining it with spare loft boards. The house is clad in 115mm shiplap from Nottage Timber. The decking is 38mm by 150mm treated boards, likewise from Nottage Timber, with a 10mm gap.

A few weekends hard work.

I’m really pleased with the project so far but there is more still to do. I have more lining work to finish and I’m planning to add a door, some windows and a plastic slide. The monsters have already moved in some furniture and taken to eating lunch out there when the weather is good enough.

I’ll write a longer blog on the actual construction once I’ve uploaded all the photos.
